Bio

Max Heart Rate: 199 bpm

FAMILY: I'm the second oldest from a family of six. Yes, my older sister is named Jill. That's right, "Jack and Jill went up the hill." Married with 2 teenagers and two 2 year olds.

OCCUPATION: Database Engineer (computer geek)

HOMETOWN: Dawsonville, GA, but originally from West Monroe, LA.

NUMBER OF YEARS RACING: 8 years, off and on, but 2007 was pretty full schedule

AVG. HRS SPENT TRAINING PER WEEK: 6-8 hrs. It's hard to get training time, when balancing with family, so we do 1-2 night training days per week after everyone is asleep.

GOALS FOR 2008: Recover from tendon injury in my foot. Concentrate on mt biking, as this doesn't seem to bother it.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Blueridge Adventure Race in 2001, 2002, & 2007 in Blueridge, GA
  • 1st place in 2007 YMCA Challenge Four Youth Adventure Race with my two teenagers.
  • 2nd place all-male division at 2007 Fort Yargo Adventure Race (5 hr race) in Winder, GA
  • 4th place co-ed division at 2007 Howl At the Moon Adventure Race (12-18 hr race) in Florida.

FAVORITE INDULGENCE: dark chocolate, movies & mountain biking (not necessarily in that order)

NON-ADVENTURE RACING ACTIVITIES: I have a 180 gal saltwater reef aquarium and like to build things.

FAVORITE QUOTE: "Remember, no matter where you go, there you are." PigKiller, in Max Max Beyond Thunderdome, who was probably quoting Confucius, but I remember it from that movie.

History

  • All district Cross-Country throughout high school. Placed 20th at state.
  • In US Air Force for 6 years, and sustained a lower back injury. Not much running during this time.
  • Started mountain biking in 2000 after moving to GA, figuring that would be less impacting on my back joints
  • 2001, Holly convinced me to do Blue Ridge Adventure Race. We just wanted to finish. We trained hard. Ran not more than 30 min at a time, 2-3 times a week. With some mountain biking on the weekend.  :D We managed to finish, even after I managed to overheat and puke my guts out during the biking section.
  • 2002, Back for more fun at Blue Ridge. I don't remember running much during training for this either. We did alot more mountain biking. We made a wrong turn (following the pack) during the mountain biking section and probably did an extra mile or 2, I had to repair a broken chain on the trail, and we still managed to finish 7 minutes faster than the year before. No puking that year.
  • 2006, Kids started raising Forester Bearded Dragons --High adventure pets for high adventure people.
  • 2007, Josh wanted to do Blue Ridge for his first adventure race. We started training together, but apparently I was not good enough for his team, as he wanted to "do good." ;) That was enough of a challenge to form our own team. Holly, Felipe, and I formed team Power Gel'n (Power Gel crossed with the shoe inserts). We were older, but Holly and I had AR experience and Felipe was a strong runner. Josh, Jordan, & Laura were the younger, more fit team, but lacked experience. In the end, our superior navigation skills/choices paid off. We took the longer flatter bike/canoe route, they took the shorter up and over bike/canoe route, and the rest is history. Frankly, we were a bit surprised that they had not yet completed the race when we came across the finish line.
  • Started a saltwater reef tank
  • 2007 November, dislodged an "extra" bone in my foot while backpacking with my son and the Boy Scouts. My posterior tibial tendon attached to that bone..this supports the foot's arch. It got progressively worse until Feb when I got my orthotics. Basically, overpriced arch supports. I think it's getting better now, but I've had to lay off all impact training (ie. no running).
  • 2008 February 9, Starting back on my feet, but taking it easy.
  • 2008 February 16, Went to an orienteering meet to see how I felt after some hiking/bushwhacking.
  • 2008 April, Tried running again, but tendon injury flared right back up.
  • 2008 April 24, Got an MRI on my foot. Podiatrist recommended I "boot" the foot for 3 weeks. I've got one of those strap on casts, that you can inflate to take the weight off the foot. All I can do now paddle... Should be able to stop wearing it around May 15th.
  • 2008 May 15, Boot is off. Feels weird to walk on my foot--body is still trained to limp.
  • 2008 May 17, Rode Nimblewill Gap to Amicalola and back (~24 miler) Felt tired, like I hadn't exercised in 3-4 weeks.  ;) Averaged 7/10 of a mph slower than February ride. Foot a little sore after.
  • 2008 June 3, I've done some more riding and paddling since the boot came off, but this was my first run since the boot came off (1.5 miles). Doctor said to add a mile every couple of days, if not in pain. Didn't hurt too much after the run.
