Reviewing the Drypak Waterproof Map Case

From TheWaterproofStore.com

The clear vinyl of this multi-purpose case keep your gear visible -- all while
keeping the contents safe from water, sand, and debris. Other features of this
waterproof case include two holes in the top clip and d-rings in the bottom
corners -- great for securing the case to your kayak deck or backpack.

Each DRY PAK case is submersible to 30 feet, and features cam lock clips that
hermetically seal out water, sand and dust. The cases are ultrasonically welded
to the top clips, so there are no parts to lose.

  • Weight: Heavy

Josh's Take

Pros:

  • watertight -- no mistaking it, your map won't get wet
  • large -- at 12"x16", this guy is huge (48 sq in. more than the Aloksak), which means less map folding and more paddling

Cons:

  • weight -- it's heavier than most map cases, since it has a large plastic seal at the top

Summary:

At first, I had to laugh when I saw this map case's bulky waterproof sealing system at the top of the case. I would not recommend using this case for adventure racing--at least not the land portions of the race. The thing the case has going for it, however, is that it is extremely waterproofed, which is why TheWaterproofStore.com gives it a 5 on the waterproofing score.

What does that mean to adventure racers? Well, if you're in a supported race, use this case for the paddling sections to prevent an opening in the seal in your ziplock or similarly closed map case from resulting in a smudged, unreadable map. A lot of times in a race, one is refolding the map anyway in the TA. Have your support crew have the map case reading and just put it in this one instead. Switch back when you get off the water. The seconds you might lose doing so may be well worth saving the hours you spent looking for that smudged CP. Also, if you're going out for a day of paddling practice, then I'd definitely recommend this case over its lighter competitors, since weight matters less on the water and waterproofing more.
