Design

This is based on Lisa Randall's map holder (Enduraventure), which apparently she adapted from "Bryan Goble's Original Ghetto Racer 5000 Bike Map holder". Trailblazer Post

Materials

  • 48" rod from Home Depot (I used the skinniest, 1/8" diameter) - $2.65
  • 2 small pipe clamps - 2@1.05 = $2.10
  • 2 small clothespin style clamps - 2@0.37 = $0.74
  • electrical tape to protect bike handle, where the clamps are - $0, cause I already have a roll

Total cost: $5.49 + tax

Measurements for bends (from end)

I leave the 2 small end bends (that form the "feet") for last, so I can figure out what direction I need to bend them in, more easily.

  • 1"
  • 2"
  • 9.5"
  • 16.5"
  • 20.5"
  • 27.5"
  • 31.5"
  • 38.5"
  • 46"
  • 47"

Josh's Take

This is by far the best homemade map carrier I've seen to date. It's also the lightest. This is the 3rd in an evolution from PVC to wire. Big thanks to Lisa Randall of Enduraventure for sharing it! The map case basically goes in from the right side and then you use the gator clips to hold the map in place. We've had one of the feet break, but this is probably due to our ultra-light weight variant (using 1/8" rod instead of Lisa's 1/4" rod). Much easier to build than previous models, so no biggie.
