Reviewing the GoLite VO24 backpack, which is touted by GoLite as the perfect pack for day races.
Josh's Take
Fit was a problem for me in the beginning because I didn't know how many points were adjustable, so I thought it didn't fit my body. Once I found out all the straps I could adjust, I fixed it. These packs are highly adjustable, so you really can make it mold your back and chest without irritation.
Pros:
- lightweight
- tow loop
- other loops for paddles
- big snack pouches
- water resistant zippers and drain holes
- highly adjustable
- large main compartment
- outer pouch
Cons:
- outer pouch not big enough to put a helmet in it. this is mitigated by the fact that it will, however, fit 2 shoes, and that the straps above it will fit a helmet in them.
- no secondary zippered pocket. this is mitigated by the zippered snack pouches, but sometimes you need a space for crap you don't need immediately and also don't want in the main compartment.
Summary:
Overall, I'd say this pack is an excellent pack for 24 hour races and possibly up to 3 day races. It may be overkill for a sprint race, however, I've tried it with a small amount of stuff in it and it does not ride funny as one might expect. Rather, it sits well on the back. And at 1 and a half pounds, it's not like you are adding a lot of extra weight by using it versus a smaller pack...
Note: If you are looking to purchase one, but don't know the size you'll be wearing, call GoLite about what sizes work for what frames. They'll give you the range your torso should be for L & M packs, and tell you where to measure. Very nice. Outfitters generally have this information and can measure you also.
