Ethos
4LPH4 1337 is a group of motivated individuals excited about adventure racing. The primary purpose of the team is to foster an environment with a plethora of opportunities to race with close friends as teammates on a recurring and consistent basis. The hope is that in aligning the team with this purpose, the following will occur:
- always being able to register teams that are in the category that qualifies for race prize winnings
- heightened team/team name recognition
- better overall performance and sponsorship possibilities
- race savings on early registration for races
- organized training events
- accountability to each other
- sense of community with each other and shared knowledge/experience of the team
- members never having to race with strangers or incompatible personalities out of desperation
- members never having to scramble to find a team at the last minute
Goals
Racing Mentality
Winning >= Competing > Finishing > DQ/DNF
Strategic Goal
To build a consistent, winning record in sprint races and a competitive placing in the 1-day races by encouraging members to excel during training and minimize risk to race performance.
Tactical Goals
- IN PROGRESS Recruiting 2 more members to enable a more flexible race schedule for individual members.
- IN PROGRESS Finding/registering for key 1-day races to build experience at longer lengths to the point of competition.
- DONE Gathering experience/winning tactics from racing frequent sprints.
- DONE Build copious group-based training opportunity for team members with tight schedules by exploring/establishing various training networks.
- DONE Establish navigator role redundancy.
- DONE Establish workhorse role redundancy.
- IN PROGRESS To seek out sponsorship aimed at charitable giving by sponsors to a worthy cause based on team performance.
Membership Commitment
In pursuance of the team goals, it is important to have a close group of driven individuals with comparable ability--sizable enough to provide ample racing opportunities for each member; tight-knit to ensure role congruency and shared race experience among its members.
As a member of team 4LPH4 1337, one is committed to the following:
- When considering competing in an adventure race, other members of 4LPH4 1337 must be considered as racing partners first and foremost over non-members. Practically, this means extending an invitation to the team to see if other members are interested in participating. Note: Exceptions may occur when there are specific/personal desires to race with non-member partners. Examples include racing with a sibling or an old high school friend as a bonding experience.
- When racing with non-4LPH4 1337 team members, the team name 4LPH4 1337 must not be used. The exception to this commitment is during recruitment, when 4LPH4 1337 members are racing with a single recruit.

History
Weight Loss Program
Looking down at a scale after 2 years of sitting in front of a computer and 199 pounds (25 pounds heavier than his college years), the first thought that came to Josh Forester's mind was "un un". It was time to turn things around. Josh decided to do an adventure race, since it was on his to-do-before-my-heart-stopped-beating list, and the training would lend way to weight loss.
Blue Ridge Rivalry
Josh started reaching out to friends and family, seeking out various running groups, and asking friends of friends if they wanted in on the action. After it was all said and done, he ended up with two teams for the 2007 Blue Ridge Adventure Race (4LP|-|4 1337 and Power Gel'n). Each team's goal: to beat the other team.
Merger
After Blue Ridge, there was a solid desire to do more. The two teams placed well and it was exciting to think about everybody's potential after adding further experience into the mix. After proving the point that experience is a huge asset in adventure racing, members of team Power Gel'n joined 4LPH4 1337 for future races, and the two became one.
Onward to 1337'ness
Driven by a love of the out-of-doors, a desire for competition, and a passion for adventure, team 4LPH4 1337 is surging into the future with dreams of competing with the greats.
Name Explanation
4LPH4 1337 (pronounced alfa leet) comes from Leetspeak. Since the majority of our members work in the computer industry, we thought the name was 1337, so it stuck.
The English translation is thus "Alpha Elite".
Fast Fact: We had changed it from the original spelling, 4LP|-|4 1337, when we decided to build a team website (pipe characters are not allowed in URLs).
4LPH4
The first part, 4LPH4 (Alpha), comes from the fact that most of our members are alpha-[fe]males and live or have lived in Alpharetta, GA. Further, Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and we strive to be first.
1337
The second part, 1337 (Elite), stems from the fact that we think highly of ourselves. :P
